University Party and Fights at McDonalds
After searching for an internet provider, Keith, his girlfriend Sarah, and I went to a grocery store in the basement floor of one of the malls. This particular grocery store sells foods from all over the world and I was ravished with delight to see that they actually had Mac and Cheese!!!! It was very expensive at 2.79 euros a box, but perhaps from time to time I’ll get it as a treat. I am surprised, I am feeding myself pretty well here in Germany. Last night I made myself noodles with chicken, carrots, and a ricotta cheese sauce, it was quite tasty. I’m somewhat at a loss, however, because I don’t know what else to cook myself. Perhaps I’ll be buying more than one box of mac and cheese after all.

The USA section is filled with Betty Crocker and Orville Redenbacher.

It's holyness.

6.39 euro for Poptarts, hmmm. That seems reasonable.

We are having a party tonight at the university for all the exchange students. Everyone is suppose to bring a traditional dish from their home country. Jon and Kevin from Arizona are brining PB&J, Keith from Ireland is brining a potato, but I haven't decided what I'm brining yet. I was thinking mac and cheese, but it is too expensive. As bad as it sounds, McDonalds crossed my mind. What is more American than fast food? That's what I thought. Big Macs for everyone!

Now pretend as if you’ve walked away from your computer for 6 hours and read the next part.

Ironically enough the party at the university was as boring as the language course. The kids from Estonia put on a little show for everyone, however. They came running out in nothing but bathing towels to a bastardized version of Livin' in America by James Brown; aptly title, ‘Welcome to Estonia‘. The Estonian kids whipped one another with shrubbery while the rest of the exchange students looked on in bewilderment. I’m still confused.

The night was not a complete loss however. I met two German students Nina and Gina, (I swear I’m not making this up), and we talked for a while. The three of us decided to leave the party early- believing nothing could top the Estonian performance, so why stay. They gave me their numbers and I think I am going to go to a club on Saturday night with Nina.

These are the first German students I’ve met besides my roommate. Hopefully through Gina and Nina I will meet many more German students because this hanging with English speakers all the time isn’t helping. Gina actually speaks English very well. She studied in Minneapolis during the 1999-2000 school year, but was very disappointed with the celebrations to bring in the new millennium, “There were just fireworks and then everything went quiet. There was nothing to do.”. Nina has not studied abroad, but her English is good nonetheless. She has a very tough time understanding the American accent though, and would like to better her American slang, but who doesn’t these days.

Oh wow! Just now a fight has broken out infront of the McDonalds. Two rival gangs from Konstanz get that craving for french fries and Mcnuggets and look what happens. Hats off to the cops for getting here so quickly. Two more hooligans on their way to the big house. I feel safer already.
